How to Tell If a Meteorite Is Real: The Complete Authentication Guide

A meteorite is one of the few things you can own that was never part of Earth. That romance is exactly why the market is full of impostors — polished slag, industrial steel, and even 3D-printed lookalikes sold as “genuine space rock.” The good news: for iron meteorites, authenticity is not a matter of opinion. This guide walks you through what a real specimen looks like, the tests you can run yourself, and how to read the paperwork before you spend a cent.
Why authentication matters
Iron meteorites are the fragments of the metallic cores of shattered asteroids. They spent billions of years cooling in space, and that history is written into the metal itself. When a seller can’t (or won’t) show you that history, you are buying a story, not a specimen. Authentication protects two things at once: the money you spend, and the meaning of the object — a certified piece of Muonionalusta is a keepsake; an anonymous lump of etched steel is a paperweight.
The Widmanstätten pattern: the unfakeable fingerprint
The single most reliable proof for an iron meteorite is the Widmanstätten pattern — a geometric lattice of interlocking crystal bands revealed when a polished cross-section is etched with a weak acid. It forms from two iron-nickel phases: kamacite (about 5% nickel) and taenite (roughly 20–65% nickel). Crucially, it only appears when the alloy cools at about 1 to 100 °C per million years, deep inside an asteroid. No furnace, no foundry, no factory on Earth can reproduce that.


5 tests you can do before you buy
You don’t need a lab. These five checks, in order, will filter out the overwhelming majority of fakes. Think of them as a decision tree — if a piece fails an early step, you can stop.
- Magnet test. Iron meteorites are strongly magnetic. If a magnet doesn’t stick at all, it isn’t an iron meteorite. (Passing this proves nothing on its own — steel is magnetic too.)
- Density / heft. Iron-nickel is dense. A real specimen feels noticeably heavier than a same-sized ordinary rock.
- The etched face. On a polished, acid-etched surface, look for continuous, directional crystal bands. Fakes tend to show a repeating stamped texture, foil wrinkles, or a flat printed image.
- Documentation. A named classification (see the table below) beats a generic “genuine meteorite” label every time.
- The seller. A clear return policy and specialist knowledge are the last, human layer of protection.

Put a genuine piece next to a common imitation and the differences are obvious once you know the tells:

How to read a certificate of authenticity
A certificate is only as good as its specifics. A trustworthy one names:
- The meteorite name (e.g., Muonionalusta) — an official name means it’s a classified, catalogued fall.
- The classification (e.g., iron, fine octahedrite; or pallasite).
- The find/fall location and, ideally, a tie to the specific piece or batch.
- A seller who backs it with a return policy.

Caring for an authenticated piece
Iron meteorites are, at heart, iron — and iron reacts with oxygen, moisture, sweat, salt, and acids. Light surface spotting is normal and is not a sign of a fake. To keep the Widmanstätten pattern sharp for decades:
- Wipe the piece dry after wear; avoid showers, pools, and the ocean.
- Store it with a silica-gel desiccant, away from humidity.
- Take rings off before hand-washing, workouts, and cleaning.
- Note that permanent clear coatings are generally discouraged — when they wear unevenly, trapped moisture can cause worse rust than bare, well-kept metal.
