How to Display and Care for a Meteorite Slice

A meteorite slice will outlast you by billions of years — but only if you keep it dry. Iron and stony-iron meteorites can rust, so a little routine care protects both the metal and the crystal pattern. This guide covers preventing rust, displaying a slice, cleaning it, and the special note for pallasites.
Why meteorite needs care
Most display slices are nickel-iron — solid metal, or metal holding olivine in a pallasite. That metal oxidizes when it meets moisture, and many meteorites absorbed chlorides during their time on Earth that speed the process up. The good news: keep the piece dry and it will stay pristine.

Preventing rust (the #1 rule)
- Keep it dry — store in a low-humidity spot; add silica gel packs to the case or drawer.
- Handle clean — hold by the edge, use cotton gloves; skin oils and sweat start rust.
- Seal the surface — wipe on a thin film of mineral oil, gun oil, or microcrystalline wax every few weeks to months.
- Avoid humid rooms — no bathrooms, kitchens, basements, or salt air.
How to display a slice
- Easel stand — shows both the pattern and the shape; easy to admire.
- Sealed case with silica gel — the best of both worlds: protection and presentation.
- Backlighting — for pallasites, a light behind the slice makes the olivine glow.
Cleaning & light rust removal
Dust with a soft dry brush. If you see early orange spots, remove loose rust gently with a soft brass or nylon brush, dry the piece thoroughly (isopropyl alcohol helps drive off moisture), then re-oil it. Never soak an iron meteorite in water.Persistent “weeping” rust (from internal chlorides) is best handled by a specialist.
Pallasite: a special note
The olivinein a pallasite is stable — it’s the surrounding metal that needs care. Keep the slice dry and oiled around the metal, avoid harsh solvents on the crystals, and a sealed display case works beautifully. Learn more in the pallasite slice guide.
