A lion carved from a single piece of Muonionalusta iron meteorite — 14.3 g, 29.7 × 24.8 mm across the face, 3.7 mm deep. Carving this material is not like carving stone. The metal has an internal crystal lattice running through it in fixed directions, and the cutter has to work with those directions rather than against them, because the pattern will show wherever the surface is opened up.
Iron meteorites are an iron-nickel alloy in elemental form, and the criss-crossing crystal structure inside them is the standard means of identifying one. It has to be etched out with nitric acid before it becomes visible. On a carved surface that etching does something a flat slice cannot: the lattice follows the contours, so the mane and the muzzle each read at a different angle and catch light independently.
