Why 4 mm matters
Depth is what allows carving in this material. At 4 mm there is enough section to cut relief without breaking through, which is not true of the thinner slices. The crystal structure inside — an interlocking iron-nickel lattice grown over millions of years in microgravity, brought out by nitric acid — then follows the carved contours instead of sitting on a single flat plane.
