
A single 6.4 g slice of Seymchan pallasite set into an S925 silver bracelet and finished by hand. The stone runs 19.5 mm along its longest edge — small enough for daily wear, large enough to show the olivine inclusions that make this material worth wearing at all.
Stony-iron meteorites account for roughly 1.2% of the total mass of meteorite material recovered on Earth. Within Seymchan itself, the olivine-bearing portion is only about 15% of the 351 kg total — the remainder is IIAB octahedrite nickel-iron. The material in this bracelet is a small fraction of an already small fraction.
In June 1967, Soviet geologist F. Smith A. Mednikov was surveying a tributary of the Jasachnaja River basin in the Magadan region when he found a mass of roughly 300 kg on the bank of the Hekandue River. A second mass of about 51 kg turned up twenty metres away, recovered by the geologist Markov. Both went to the USSR Academy of Sciences.
The first classification was wrong. The samples happened to come from a section of pure metal texture, atypical of the fall as a whole, and Seymchan was catalogued as a IIE iron meteorite. It stayed that way for decades.
The correction came from a buyer rather than a laboratory. In the early 1990s, after the Soviet Union dissolved, a German collector acquired the 51 kg mass. Cutting it apart revealed olivine that the original sampling had missed entirely. In 2007 the Nomenclature Committee of the Meteoritical Society formally reclassified Seymchan as a pallasite.
This material contains iron and will rust if left exposed to air. Every piece is sealed with an epoxy coating before it ships, which is what keeps the surface stable. Treat it as you would any sealed finish — avoid abrasives and prolonged soaking.
