What you see on the face

The criss-crossing bands are iron and nickel crystals that grew into one another as the parent body cooled — on the order of one degree per million years, in microgravity. They are invisible in raw metal and appear only after etching with nitric acid or a comparable pickling solution. Every face is different because no two sections cut the lattice at the same angle.
