How to Read a Meteorite Certificate of Authenticity (Before You Buy)

A “Certificate of Authenticity” sounds reassuring — but the words alone mean nothing. A useful certificate makes specific, checkable claims about a specific meteorite. Here’s exactly what it should contain, how to verify each line, and the red flags that tell you to walk away.

Why the certificate matters (and where it doesn’t)

How to verify each field

  • Look up the name. Search the meteorite’s official name in the Meteoritical Bulletin Database. A real name returns an entry with matching type and locality.
  • Cross-check the type. The class on the certificate (e.g. “IVA”, “PMG pallasite”) should match the database entry for that name.
  • Confirm the locality. Muonionalusta is Sweden; Gibeon is Namibia; Brenham is Kansas, USA. A mismatch is a warning sign.
  • Weigh the piece. The stated mass should match what you receive.
  • Contact the issuer. A reputable seller will happily answer questions about origin and type.

  • Not by itself. A certificate is only as trustworthy as who issued it and what it states. A meaningful certificate names the official meteorite, its type and classification, its mass, and ideally references the Meteoritical Bulletin. A generic 'Certificate of Authenticity' with no specifics proves nothing.
