
The widest band we make — 17 mm across, 4 mm thick, carved by hand from Muonionalusta iron meteorite. Width is the whole argument here. At 17 mm the crystal lattice runs across the surface as a continuous field rather than a compressed line, which is the difference between seeing the structure and merely knowing it is there.
Iron meteorites are an iron-nickel alloy in elemental form, and the interlocking lattice inside them is the standard means of identification. It is a cooling record — roughly one degree per million years, in the microgravity of open space — and it does not exist on the surface until nitric acid or a comparable solution etches it out. Repeated laboratory attempts to reproduce the conditions have failed.
A gemstone's appeal is fire, constant from any angle. Metal behaves differently. Most of the time this band reads as quiet grey crystalline lines; then your hand turns, the light finds the right incidence, and a hard silver flash comes off the surface and is gone. On a band this wide it happens across the full width at once.
